Vietnamese President visits US
President Nguyen Minh Triet headed a
large business delegation to New York,
Washington and Los Angeles, from June 18
to June 23, where deals were signed in
the energy, financial services, IT, and
telecommunication sectors.
The governments signed a Trade and
Investment Framework Agreement, which
will be used to expand trade and resolve
disputes, U.S. and Vietnamese officials
said, while state-run Vietnam Airlines
and Boeing Co. were negotiating aircraft
contracts.
Hanoi and Washington have signed two
trade deals in the past six years;
agreements that paved the way for
Vietnam to accede to the World Trade
Organization in January 2007.
President George W. Bush, hosting
Vietnams Head of State in an historic
visit, welcomed robust trade ties. The
visit by President Triet, marks the
first official visit by a Vietnamese
Head of State to the United States.

FPT Software staff enjoy Summer holiday
FPT Software staff will have 5-day summer
vacation, divided into two periods, June 18-22
and July 09-13.
FPT SOFTWARE AWARDS ANOTHER MIGRATING
PROJECT
FPT Software has been awarded yet another
contract for a migration project; this time for
a back-end system of a large online e-commerce
operation from a Japanese customer, which will
be used by approximately 28 million
end-users. The project, valued at 1600-man-month
(of the total 2300 man-month), requires the
conversion of applications from UNIX, ORACLE
Pro*C to WINDOWS .NET and MS SQL, and will
involve as many as 150 staff.
FPT Software staff started to use Check
PointEto report their performance results in
the first six months of 2007
and plan for the next six. Check Point, a companys
management tool, helps supervisors to measure
and evaluate their staffs capabilities in task
accomplishment and planning.
TWO NEW STRATEGY UNITS ESTABLISHED
FPT Software has recently announced the
establishment of two Software Strategic Units
(SU) located in Hanoi: SU1 and SU27. SU1, with
70 staff, is responsible for developing embedded
systems for the Japanese market, whilst, SU 27,
with around 60 staff, is in charge of software
projects, using Cobol language, outsourced by
Japanese customers.
FPT FUND MANAGEMENT ESTABLISHED
The State Securities Commission granted its
preliminary approval for the establishment of
FPT Fund Management Co on 13 June. The new firm
is expected to become operational next month.
The Corporation has already been given a green
light to establish a brokerage firm and it is
also seeking Central Bank permission to open a
commercial bank.
Shares in FPT closed at 305,000 VND on 14 June,
valuing the Hanoi-based company at $1.15 billion
and making it the third-largest firm on the Ho
Chi Minh City Stock Exchange.

FPT has opened 5,000 wireless internet access
points using Wi-Fi technology in HCM City and
Hanoi.
The US$1.5-million project aims to make HCM
City and Ha Noi WiFi cities. FPT plans to
increase the number of sites to 8,000 by the end
of the year.
FPT University and the Association for Overseas
Technical Scholarships (AOTS) of Japan signed an
agreement on using licensed Japanese books
(13 June). On that basis, the university is authorized
to publish 22 different kinds of books, which
will be used as part of its syllabus in
September 2007. The FPT students are required to
pass the 2-kyu level Japanese exam before they
graduate.

TO PUSH PACE OF SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT
Vietnam IT Outsourcing Conference, co-hosted by the Ministry of
Post and Telematics and the Ho Chi Minh City Peoples Committee
in Ho Chi Minh City on 8th June 2007, attracted 500 IT
enterprises. At the conference, local and international
businesses shared experiences on software outsourcing; and
discussed market opportunities as well as strategies for Vietnam
to develop its services.
Vietnam is among
the most attractive countries in the world in terms of
competitive software outsourcing companies. The country has
around 750 software firms, 150 of which engage in outsourcing,
with exports grossing over US $350 million last year, including
US $110 million from exports alone.

Matsushita Electric Industrial Co.,
Ltd. (MEI), a Japanese electronics manufacturer, has established
R&D Panasonic Center Vietnam to research and develop
software for home digital-electronic appliances in Vietnam. This
is Matsushitas third center in the ASEAN region, following
Singapore and Malaysia.

INTEL LAUNCHES INITIATIVE FOR EDUCATION
Intel Vietnam and the Ministry of Education and Training
have signed an agreement to carry out an "Information
Communication Technology for education" initiative. Accordingly,
Intel Vietnam will supply 1,050 computers for schools nationwide
on a trial basis. The company will also train teachers in use of
IT applications. This is one of the initiatives of Intels
World AheadEprogram.

ROBOCON CROWNS NEW CHAMPION
The Danang
University of Technologys BKDC team won the title, with Hanoi
Industrial Universitys DT03 team named as runner-up, at the
Robocon Vietnam 2007 contest whose theme this year was
Discovering Halong BayE All the contenders took a great leap
forward in applying new technologies, including image processing
technology.
The top two
teams will participate in the 6th Asia Pacific
Robocon 2007 Competition, organized by the Asia-Pacific
Broadcasting Unions Robot Competition in Vietnam on August 26th.
The contest is hosted by Vietnam Television and sponsored by
Toyota Vietnam and FPT Corporation.
Vietnam has
participated in all five ABU robot contests so far and won
championship titles in 2002, 2004, and 2006.
